Starship Command is indeed one of my favourites, many of the other greats have been mentioned. But don't forget the BBC had some of the best arcade clones on any 8-bit! Meteors - (Asteroids), Planetoid (Defender), Killer Gorilla (Donkey Kong) and my personal fave Zalaga (Galaga obviously), another great game by Nick Orlando who I believe also made Frak and Firetrak.
Good, balanced review from a non-beeb owner mate ;)Mrrockitthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09895944752670745041noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5455082771543433548.post-88782682278121876782014-03-01T00:43:10.967+00:002014-03-01T00:43:10.967+00:00That certainly sounds like a better way to spend C...That certainly sounds like a better way to spend Computer Studies class than learning about Winchester Tape drives :( We had a couple of Archimedes too, nearer the end of my time at school of course, but they were for the Sixth Formers only :(RetroKingSimonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05609689348601442117noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5455082771543433548.post-28541797635886279002014-02-28T23:34:12.746+00:002014-02-28T23:34:12.746+00:00Things're adequate, Simon - thanks for asking ...Things're adequate, Simon - thanks for asking :o)

Think we might've also had an Archimedes at school, because I definitely remember playing Virus on it (or "Lander" as it was known on that particular machine).

There's still one BBC "Edutainment" title I haven't been able to track down, despite spending over a decade on the Internet looking for it. It was a Formula One racing game, only to "race", players took turn in plotting the co-ordinates onto the race track of where they wanted their car to go to. Whoever found their way around fastest won. More fun that it sounds.TwoHeadedBoyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14946450138433182058noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5455082771543433548.post-80709343349728660102014-02-28T12:08:32.203+00:002014-02-28T12:08:32.203+00:00Hey there, THB, how's things? I'll take a look at it soon actually, it's probably awful :P Also, I think I agree regarding the colour scheme - the BBC uses some very bright colours which suited its games well :)RetroKingSimonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05609689348601442117noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5455082771543433548.post-46654707350476444552014-02-27T23:44:12.879+00:002014-02-27T23:44:12.879+00:00We had a BBC in primary school, my favourite game ...We had a BBC in primary school, my favourite game on it was one called Monsters - it wasn't until a couple of years ago I realised it was a complete rip-off of Space Panic, but there you go!

Minor note: The BBC's "colour-scheme" is my second-favourite of the old computers, after the Spectrum.TwoHeadedBoyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14946450138433182058noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5455082771543433548.post-43612537389555523552014-02-27T17:15:28.887+00:002014-02-27T17:15:28.887+00:00Hi Ben, thanks for dropping by! :) I already have ...Hi Ben, thanks for dropping by! :) I already have plans to take a look at some of the games you mention and I'm sure I'll discovers numerous others at some stage too. I agree that, from what I saw while doing this feature, the BBC could stand next to the Speccy/C64/etc from a technical standpoint but it doesn't have nearly as many games available, does it? Not that it makes it crap of course, I enjoyed the time I spent with it and will return soon :)RetroKingSimonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05609689348601442117noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5455082771543433548.post-11443644588057145182014-02-27T16:22:06.988+00:002014-02-27T16:22:06.988+00:00As a (not that rich) BBC owner, I'm here to st...As a (not that rich) BBC owner, I'm here to stand up for the little beige box, and I'll fight anyone in the playground who says it wasn't as good as the Speccy or C64! Games-wise, off the top of my head...Elite (of course), Exile was also amazing (needed a Master for that, though, I think), Repton - you should go for Repton 3 and it's variants, they were the pinnacle of the series, Revs was the best driving game, there was also a fun Road Rash clone, Citadel - if only for the speech at the beginning, Palace of Magic, Styker's Run and its sequel, Spy Cat, Fortress (Zaxxon clone), Frakk!...I'm sure there were millions of others, but I'd better stop now. I hope you do have a further peek into its back catalogue in future, there were some great games there. Ah, memories... :)Binkbenchttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03947673688012262911noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5455082771543433548.post-20118819396074536562014-02-27T15:19:04.351+00:002014-02-27T15:19:04.351+00:00Ah yes, Elite - I had to fight the urge to include...Ah yes, Elite - I had to fight the urge to include it in this feature! I'll take a proper look at it another time instead though, it deserves more than a paragraph :) I have become aware of Starship Command while 'researching' this feature so I'll look at that one at some point too :)RetroKingSimonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05609689348601442117noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5455082771543433548.post-68850156331044054612014-02-27T14:53:11.099+00:002014-02-27T14:53:11.099+00:00One of my rich mates had BBC Model B and disk driv...One of my rich mates had BBC Model B and disk drive back in the day. I'll never forget seeing Elite for the first time - at that point there was nothing like it available on any other home computer.

Starship Command is an exclusive worth trying too. It doesn't look or sound great but is strangely addictive. I also seem to remember a Mr Do clone that was pretty good.

It was probably so expensive as it was built like a tank.Wingnuthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07859158206963441813noreply@blogger.com
