Game Gallery #2 - Part 1

Bubble Bobble (1986)
Arcade Version - full review here

I'm pretty sure there aren't too many gamers who would challenge the generally held belief that Bubble Bobble is one of the greatest videogames ever made. The fact that it's composed of a massive 100 rounds of action certainly doesn't hurt, but it does mean it's a lengthy trek to play through the whole game. Some people are somehow able to play through the entire game without even losing one life. Others, like me, are not so gifted and can only reach round 40 on a good day! It was therefore an enormous challenge for me to play through the game for this piece (which may have involved the odd 'save states' or two!). It was also a privilege and a pleasure, however, to see this great game in its entirety and I happily present the the fruits of my labour over the next two posts. Here are the first fifty stages :)

Part 2 coming soon! :)

  1. Aah, but which is your favourite?

Out of this lot, I would go for the Popcorn level. A great example of developers exploiting the available game mechanics to give the player something a little different. The fact that the enemies bounce around the screen like popcorn upon contact with the fire is brilliant.

  2. I like the rounds where you can trap all the enemies and their bubbles can all group together for a mega-pon! Round 10 was one I liked a lot, and there's a few more in the next 50 :P

  5. Yes, thanks, it's a great piece. I'm not even sure yet how I'm going to do the second part to this piece, I can only get to round 95 so far! :|

  6. Oh man, I guess I have to get hole punched out of my Gamer card for this, but I believe Bubble Bobble is overrated and I never really liked it... ... awkward...

  8. Like Nintendolegend I never really liked Bubble Bobble. Didn't give it much of a go during the RG LAP feature to win me over either. I'm going to have to sit down and have a real go at it sometime...
